Devin Cooper’s story is straight out of a MOVIE! 🤯

When Cooper was around 13-14 years old, he was sent to the hospital by his doctor because he was really sick. The doctor said he has never seen him like this before.

After running a bunch of tests, the doctors tell Devin’s mom that they think he has Leukemia. With that diagnosis, he’d have to get transfusions every week, and his basketball career would be pretty much over.

His mom, distraught, went home and prayed while Devin was in the hospital over the next few weeks. The doctors eventually come back and say they don’t know what happened, but they must have missed or misread something. Cooper didn’t have Leukemia, but he did have a virus and pneumonia, which he needed to take steroids for. The steroids caused him to gain weight, and he had to eventually get himself back to his playing weight.

He eventually gets himself right, and plays four years in high school. His career has some ups and downs due to issues with grades, but he earns a scholarship to Radford University by his senior year.

This is where things to another turn.

His senior year they are on a 20+ game winning streak, and everything is going great — until he tears his ACL. Luckily, Radford still honors the scholarship and he’s able to rehab and play his freshman year.

This is where adversity would hit again.

Cooper works on his game all summer, and earns a starting position his sophomore year. Everything is going well — then he tears his other ACL five games into the season.

Devin was distraught, but he still pushes through and goes through the rehab process again. The only difference is, this time when he returned, he lost his mobility and athleticism, which eventually led to him transferring to Division II, Catawba College.

At Catawba, Cooper found his groove again — starting all 30 games in 2020 and averaging 18.1 ppg. He racked up a number of awards including second team All-Southeast Region, SAC MVP and All-Tournament.

After college, the Charlotte native went pro, playing his last two seasons in Switzerland. This past season he averaged 20 ppg as a second year pro.

Cooper will be w/ @virginiadreambasketball for TBT 2022! 🙌
