Tis the season! You can watch the Brown Trout spawn under the Peace Bridge, and/or other bridges.

Brown trout spawn in the fall and early winter (usually October to December) when water temperatures drop. When spawning, they become more aggressive and territorial and make stupid decisions, like moving into shallow water and becoming less aware of predators. A lot of places are closed for fishing in Alberta during this time.

The females lay on the riverbed and use their tails to push away sand and gravel to make a little hole, which is called a 'redd' for some reason, and then she deposits thousands of eggs into it. The males show up and fertilize them with their fish sperm (called milt for some reason) and then the female covers them with sand/gravel to keep them safe.

Assuming the current and predators don't ruin things, they'll hatch in the spring, usually around March or April. Baby fish are called fry! (the word comes from an old English or Old Norse term meaning "offspring," "spawn," or "little ones").

And that's it. They go off on their little fish lives to get little fish jobs and raise little fish families and have to deal with little fish properly taxes and all that fun stuff.
