What a sight it must have been: A 16-year-old Chinese American girl, on horseback, leading a massive women’s rights parade up New York’s Fifth Avenue.

It was May 1912, and Mabel Ping-Hua Lee was a new, youthful force in the U.S. women’s suffrage movement. The recent revolution in China had ended the monarchy and raised hopes for women’s rights there. American suffrage leaders thought, “If Chinese women can win their rights, so can we!”

So Lee and other women of Chinese heritage were an inspiration to leaders such as Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, who built the Chinese Tea House at Marble House where she hosted rallies that raised money and publicity for the cause.

Learn more about this lesser-known history during our lecture Thursday at 6pm live at Marble House and via Zoom: “‘Our Sisters in China are Free’: Chinese Women’s Contributions to US Suffrage."

Our speakers will be Dr. Cathleen D. Cahill of Pennsylvania State University and The Rev. Bayer Lee, pastor of the First Chinese Baptist Church in Chinatown, where Mabel Lee was once director.
