Anticipating next Thursday’s “Gilded Age Orchestra” musical program at The Breakers, here’s an instrument that epitomizes “Gilded Age.” This Louis XV-style grand piano is in the Ballroom of The Elms; it is not original to the house, but it fits right in.

Made by Steinway & Sons circa 1900, the piano is constructed of maple wood and entirely covered in gold leaf, including the interior. The sides are decorated with trophies of musical instruments, acanthus leaves and ribbons, while the scalloped edges are accented with a continuous band of acanthus-clad S-scrolls and C-scrolls centering on scallop shells. The hinged cover for the ivory keys is inscribed "STEINWAY & SONS / MAKERS" within a scallop shell flanked by a pair of cherubs playing musical instruments. (Gift of Mrs. Curtis Brooks and Mrs. Virginia Mabley, 1966)
