After completing Rosecliff in 1902, architect Stanford White used many of the same Beaux-Arts design elements in his next project, a sporting pavilion at John Jacob Astor IV’s estate in Rhinebeck, N.Y. Once again, his inspiration was the Grand Trianon at Versailles.

The result was almost a sister of Rosecliff, with resemblances including the paired Ionic pilasters, tall arched windows and balustraded roof.

This 40,000-square-foot building is known today as Astor Courts. Built as an amusement palace, it featured an indoor tennis court, squash court, bowling alley and Middle Eastern-inspired indoor swimming pool. It was restored in recent years by none other than architect Samuel G. White – Stanford White’s great-grandson.

Rosecliff is now undergoing restoration itself, including replacement of the roof and balustrade along with other work on the exterior and interior. It is scheduled to open to the public in September.
