4 Non Blondes – What’s Up?

Released in 1993 as the second single from 4 Non Blondes’ debut album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, “What’s Up?” became one of the most recognizable alternative rock anthems of the decade. Led by singer and songwriter Linda Perry, the song combines a straightforward guitar arrangement with an emotionally charged vocal performance that gradually builds into a powerful, unforgettable chorus. Despite its title, the phrase “What’s Going On?” is famously repeated throughout the chorus, giving the song its distinctive identity.

At its heart, “What’s Up?” captures the frustration of trying to understand the world, searching for meaning, and struggling to find one’s place in life. Perry’s raw delivery and deeply personal songwriting transformed these feelings into a universal expression of confusion, hope, and the desire for change. The music video, featuring the band’s unconventional styling and Perry’s unmistakable presence, further established the song’s place within the alternative rock culture of the early 1990s.

The track became an international hit, reaching No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping charts in several countries. Although 4 Non Blondes disbanded shortly after their breakthrough, “What’s Up?” continued to find new audiences through radio, television, internet culture, and countless cover performances. More than three decades later, its soaring chorus and message of searching for answers remain timeless, making it an enduring anthem of individuality and emotional expression.
