Entitled “Paradise Valley-Hanging Rock,” this early 20th-century watercolor comes from the collection at Kingscote. The artist, Louisa Clark Sturtevant (1870-1958), while born in Paris, grew up in Middletown, R.I., next to Newport. In muted tones she depicts the natural beauty of this area near Sachuest Beach in Middletown, which was an inspiration for many other artists of the time including John LaFarge, William Trost Richards and John Frederick Kensett.

Sturtevant was a graduate of the Massachusetts School of Fine Arts in Boston, worked as a designer for Tiffany and was a founder of the Newport Art Association, now the Newport Art Museum. (Gift of the Estate of Mrs. Gwendolen E. Rives, 1973)
