Have you ever studied the skylight over the grand staircase at The Breakers? It is the work of John La Farge (1835-1910), one of the great stained-glass artists of the Gilded Age.

La Farge, whose birthday was Thursday, experimented with materials and shapes, innovated the use of opalescent glass, received patents for new methods of stained-glass production, and is credited with reinventing the art.

He was also a painter, and the Preservation Society has several of his watercolor studies and architectural drawings in our archives. La Farge moved to Newport in the late 1850s to study with artist William Morris Hunt, the brother of architect Richard Morris Hunt, who designed Marble House and The Breakers.
