A new study of the film industry’s economic impact gives Rhode Island legislators good reasons to renew or expand the state’s tax credit for film and television productions. These tax credits bring in projects that might not otherwise come here, and they more than pay for themselves.

HBO’s filming of “The Gilded Age” in the Newport Mansions and elsewhere in spring 2021 was a big boost to local businesses, especially during the pandemic. The report by Industrial Economics Inc. cites a previous example – AMC’s “NOS4A2” – showing that $1 of tax credit resulted in $5.44 of economic activity in Rhode Island. This helps a wide range of businesses, including food and hospitality, equipment rental, construction and retail. Best of all, the popularity of “The Gilded Age,” and the fact that it features Newport by name, most certainly will bring more film-based tourism here and elsewhere in Rhode Island for a long time.
