Textiles are the material most vulnerable to deterioration over many decades, but thanks to the work of our Conservation team, some of the fabrics in the Newport Mansions are original or partly original. Here are two examples from Marble House:

In Consuelo Vanderbilt’s Bedroom (left), the bed coverlet and bolster pillow are original to the room, made by Parisian textile producer Gilbert Cuel in the 19th century. They were gifted along with the bed by Frederick Prince, the last owner of Marble House before it was acquired by the Preservation Society in 1963. The bed itself is not Consuelo’s original bed, however.

In Alva Vanderbilt’s Bedroom, the bedspread is made of original textile and embroidery fragments that were combined with newer material in the 1960s as the original had deteriorated. The bed is by Jules Allard, but the baldachin/canopy was added in the 1960s.

Consuelo’s room appears in HBO's “The Gilded Age” as George Russell’s bedroom. Alva’s inspired the set design for Bertha Russell’s bedroom in the show. Take a closer look at both the next time you visit Marble House!
