Monday’s episode of gildedagehbo, entitled “Irresistible Change,” closed with an illuminating event. At 3 p.m. on September 4, 1882, New York City was lit up by electric power for the first time when a switch was flipped at Pearl Street Station, the world's first central power station. 

As a crowd made up of every level of Gilded Age society applauds, Nathan Lane’s Ward McAllister observes “this is a turning point in history” and wonders if we are going in the right direction. Bertha Russell, a character based on Alva Vanderbilt, responds, “We must go where history takes us.”
