When touring the mansions, it’s always a good idea to look up. This ceiling painting in Alva Vanderbilt’s bedroom in Marble House is entitled “Minerva Goddess of Wisdom Overcoming Time.” It depicts the helmeted goddess seated in the heavens with Time asleep at her feet and four allegorical female figures reclining before them. Painted around 1721 by Italian artist Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini (1675-1741), the work was originally installed in the Library of the Palazzo Pisani in Venice. As the days get shorter during the holiday season, we could all use a little help “overcoming time.” (Gift of the Estate of Mr. Frederick H. Prince.)
