These triple-gourd shaped armorial vases can be found in Mrs. Vanderbilt’s Bedroom in The Breakers. Made in the Chinese Export style, these early 20th-century vases were manufactured by the Samson et Cie factory in France. Edmé Samson (French, 1810-1891) founded the factory with the idea of creating reproduction ceramics after earlier designs by famous European manufacturers and Chinese Export wares. These reproductions were of such high quality that even today they can be confused with the originals. On the bottom, they have a Samson mark in imitation of Asian characters. (Gift of Mr. & Mrs. John R. Drexel III in memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Morris Smith, 1994.)
