Many years from now, if this stone wall needs to be rebuilt again, workers will find a time capsule placed there on October 30, 2021. Volunteers who rebuilt 280 feet of this old wall at the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown, R.I., wrote notes to the future and put them in a short section of PVC pipe that was then sealed on both ends, placed in the base of the wall and covered with stones.

The capsule also contains a granola bar wrapper because, as one volunteer said, “A lot of granola bars went into this project!” The project is part of the ongoing Aquidneck Stone Wall Initiative, a collaboration of the Preservation Society and Preserve Rhode Island with funding by the van Beuren Charitable Foundation.
