We call it "Homage to Alexander" for short, but the full name of the tapestry being reinstalled at The Breakers is "The Family of King Darius of Persia Paying Homage to Alexander the Great." One of nine tapestries depicting events in Alexander’s life, it was designed by Karel van Mander II (1579-1623), and woven in his workshop in Delft, Holland. At the bottom of the tapestry, below the monkey’s tail, is a Latin phrase that translates as “Mander made this in the year 1619.” Cornelius Vanderbilt II purchased the tapestry at an auction in Florence, Italy. It hung above the landing of the Grand Staircase for 122 years before it was removed in autumn 2017 for conservation by experts in Belgium.
