Visitors to The Breakers may spend all their time in the Billiard Room gazing at the beautiful mosaic work and never stop to appreciate the impressive hanging chandelier. Due to its great weight, this massive lighting fixture of hand-wrought bronze is supported by a twin armature fastened directly into the steel beams of the house. The frame is suspended from two chains elaborately decorated with scrolled ornament and a heavy traverse rail suspending two similar chains terminating in lamp fittings for electric and gas lights with opaque glass shades. This chandelier is a replacement for the original circular, Moorish inspired, Tiffany designed fixture removed by the Vanderbilt family around 1897. A photograph of the room (second image) from 1895 by Frank Child shows the original chandelier. Gift of Countess Anthony Szapáry, 1974.
