## Caption

This Renaissance revival carved oak settee is part of the suite of furniture found in Consuelo Vanderbilt’s bedroom at Marble House. Original to the room, the settee was made by the Parisian workshops of Jules Allard & Sons. The back, seat and armrests are upholstered in red satin with gold appliqué by Gilbert Cuel. A close look at the appliqué reveals mermaids, shells, flowers and grotesque masks. The carved oak frame of the settee is no less ornate, with curling vines and grotesque masks on the back, lion head armrests, and flowers along the seat rail. (Gift of the Estate of Mr. Frederick H. Prince, 1963).
