## Caption

When you visit The Elms, look for this green painted wicker Morris chair in the conservatory. Made by the Wakefield (MA) Rattan Co., the armchair has a rectangular, ratcheted adjustable back, open armrests, and scroll decoration on the sides. The back and seat have a tufted cushion upholstered in green fabric. The design of this chair can be found in a c. 1897 Wakefield Rattan Company illustrated catalogue. A shellac or stain version like this retailed for $13.50. Lightweight and unharmed by wet weather, outdoor wicker furniture reached the height of popularity between 1865 and 1880. The Wakefield Rattan Co. was one of its most popular manufacturers. The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, Chateau-sur-Mer and Green Animals are all open today. Link in bio.
