We celebrate Women’s History Month with this cast bronze sculpture in the collection at Chepstow entitled "Grazing Ewe” by Rosa Bonheur (French, 1822-1899), the most famous female artist of the late 19th century. Bonheur was celebrated for realistic depictions of animals, which she studied from life. She had a dispensation from the French police to wear trousers and a smock to visit butcher shops and slaughterhouses, and kept her own menagerie that included a lion and lioness, a stag, wild sheep and horses. Her work was sought by rich Gilded Age collectors. She made several sculptures but gave up the medium in order to not compete with her brother Isidore, also a gifted sculptor. (Bequest of Mrs. Alletta Morris McBean, 1986).
