No Gilded Age society dinner would have been served without a wide variety of wines, champagnes and spirits of the most exceptional vintage. We can’t vouch for whether these specimens are still drinkable, but they certainly are vintage!

This collection of Madeira, port, sherry and whiskey comes from the former wine cellars of Alice Vanderbilt and her son-in-law and daughter Harry Payne and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. They were a gift of Mrs. Whitney Tower in 2017 and are kept in the cellar at The Breakers.

The serving of wines and spirits during an elegant dinner followed a set of rules. Servants were always to pour on the right side of a guest, in contrast to the service of food. Champagne should only be given to those who wanted it, and overfilling was strictly avoided.

The Preservation Society continues the tradition of pairing fine food and drink with our annual Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival, which starts on Thursday. Most events are sold out, but there may be some reservations left for our Restaurant Program. Visit www.newportmansions.org/events/wine-and-food-festival to learn more.
