Sailboat Craft

Summer Family Days are finally here! To keep our community and families safe, we’ve decided to make it a virtual experience this summer. Enjoy activities planned for Tuesdays at Chateau-sur-Mer and Thursdays at Green Animals from the comfort of your home and yard!

What will you find when you visit our website every Tuesday and Thursday in July during these Digital Summer Family Days? 

1. A craft/art project
2. List of suggested books to read
3. A movement activity
No matter what you choose to do, they can be done in your home or outside on a nice day! Remember to support your local libraries and bookstores. 

Here is a peek at our first Create project for Tuesdays at Chateau-sur-Mer – Sailboat Craft. Visit https://www.newportmansions.org/learn/kids-families/family-programs/tuesdays-at-chateau to download a PDF of the complete project.

What you need:
• Construction paper (2 shades of blue, white, and brown)
• (Optional - provided)Boat and sail stencil 
• (Optional) Paper plate or newspaper for the mess
• Crayons or oil pastels (example used oil pastels)
• Scissors
• Glue or glue stick

Trace your own sail and boat or use the stencil provided. Sail – white paper (or other color if you prefer) and brown for the boat (other color if you prefer). Cut 3 strips of blue paper. Glue 2 strips to the bottom, fold back to create a wave texture to the paper – see photo for example. Glue boat a little bit above the second wave and place the last blue strip over the bottom of the boat with the same effect as before. Add details to the water and boat – see photo for example. Glue the sail above, bringing out some of the paper to give the illusion of wind blowing. Draw the mast and add clouds, birds, or the sun!
