## Caption

This 17th-century Chinese bronze temple bell comes from the collection at Kingscote, where it hangs in the dining room and was used to summon guests to dinner. The sides of the bell are full of decorative details in raised relief. Calligraphy descends along the sides, a dragon (closeup photo) glides across the body, and bands with delicate floral details encircle the top and bottom. The handle of the bell is molded into a cloud form shape, from which it is suspended from a large iron support rod that bears the hefty weight of the bell. (Gift of the Estate of Mrs. Gwendolen E. Rives)
