Cornelius Vanderbilt was born on this date in 1794. Known as “The Commodore,” he was born on Staten Island, and rose to prominence while building his wealth in shipping and railroads, contributing to the expansion of the transportation infrastructure in the United States in the process. The patriarch of the Vanderbilt family, he became one of the richest men in America. The Breakers and Marble House were built by two of his grandsons. This portrait of Vanderbilt by Jared B. Flagg (dated 1879) is located in The Breakers.
