Essential Info for visiting The Maldives SAVE + SHARE

Greetings from The Maldives! 🇲🇻 I recently visited this island nation as a special guest of the tourism board and all I can say is YES, you should believe the ALL the hype!  Though this was my second time in the country (I visited back in 2014), my eyes have truly been opened to what a captivating place this is.

Interested in going? Here are a few tips to help plan your trip:

1. The Maldives is an island nation located southwest of India and Sri Lanka. Situated in the Indian Ocean and comprised of nearly 2000 islands, the beauty of The Maldives is world renowned.

2. To get to The Maldives, you have to fly into its capital, Male (Velana International Airport). One of the most direct ways to get there from the U.S. and Canada will involve a layover in Europe or the Middle East (I flew there via Dubai, for example). From Male, most travelers will get to their island resorts via seaplane, ferry, or speedboat.

3. Divehi is the official language but English is widely spoken in most tourist areas. In fact, the level of English many Maldivians have is near native— they learn it in school from a young age and many classes, even at the elementary level, are conducted entirely in English.

4. The official currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa.  However, US Dollars are accepted as legal tender throughout the nation, and all major credit cards are accepted.

5. The Maldives is known for its gorgeous beaches and amazing marine biodiversity. Water sports are where it’s at and Maafushi Island is one of the best and most economical options to do them. 

6. While The Maldives was previously known as a luxury destination, you can visit on a budget!! It’s truly not as expensive as you would think— there are a variety of ways you can reduce costs on accommodations and activities.  Stay tuned for a future post detailing how!
