I came across a clip of Leah Williamson speaking at the Oxford Union a few years ago, and it felt like the perfect time to bring it back 🤝 Investment in women’s football is growing, but the disparity between clubs at the top and those further down the pyramid is still striking. Chelsea, for example, have launched a fertility fund giving players access to fertility treatments, helping remove one of the barriers that can make women feel they have to choose between starting a family and a career in football. Yet just one league below, Durham had to make a public call for investment, with the future of the club in danger due to a lack of funding. It highlights how two groups of players can be competing at a similar level on the pitch, while their experiences behind the scenes can be worlds apart. But it’s also important to recognise how much has changed. Leah spoke about visiting away changing rooms that didn’t even have sanitary bins because they had been designed for men. Today, more and more clubs are putting real thought and investment into facilities and support for their women’s teams. These things should never have been considered a luxury, but the progress is still worth recognising. The women’s game is growing. The challenge now is making sure that growth isn’t limited to those already at the top. Because investment shouldn’t just make the biggest clubs bigger. It should help build a sustainable game at every level. 🤝 @The Oxford Union #leahwilliamson #womensfootball #football #woso #shesaballer
