Mikel Arteta and Xabi Alonso were both born in the Basque country three months apart from one another. They became best friends at a very young age and were inseparable on the weekends, playing in central midfield together for local club Antiguoko. The pair played together until Arteta was scouted by Barcelona aged 15. He left his home town to join Barça and on his debut for Barcelona reserves he fittingly replaced Pep Guardiola. Alonso was picked up by Real Sociedad, the club that both of the boys had dreamed of playing for. He became a fixture in the first team and was even awarded the captain’s armband at 20. After spells at PSG and Rangers, Arteta was set to make his boyhood dream come true and play alongside Alonso in midfield for Sociedad when he signed for them in 2004. But in that same window, Alonso left for Liverpool. Later that season, Arteta would follow Alonso to Merseyside but joined the blue side of town. The best friends competed against each other for 5 years in one of the fiercest local derbies. This weekend they are reunited again, not just as friends but also as rivals, again. #arteta #alonso #arsenal #chelsea
