Forest Green Rovers have published a club statement in support of the Palestinian people, becoming the first professional English club to take such a stance publicly. The statement frames the club’s position as a matter of human rights and international law, not politics, race or religion, drawing a clear line between criticism of the Israeli government and antisemitism. “Our support for the Palestinian people — is not and never can be anti-Jewish or anti the people of Israel,” the statement reads. “It is anti the government of Israel and its armed forces — the people directly responsible for the atrocities the world has witnessed, not just recently but going back over fifty years. “We see a great crime in progress, the abuse of an entire nation of people. We consider keeping quiet in such circumstances to be immoral. Everyone is welcome at FGR. Supporting Palestinian human rights does not contradict that principle. It is an expression of that.” This is only the FGR’s latest show of solidarity with Palestine. The club have displayed a ‘free Palestine’ banner on their LED advertising board around the ground, as well as proudly flying the Palestinian flag several times at games for years. Very few in football have spoken out on Palestine, let alone clubs, and those who have have faced consequences. Arsenal reportedly sacked kit manager Mark Bonnick on Christmas Eve 2024 over pro-Palestine posts despite FA guidance that they breached no rules; he is now suing for unfair dismissal. Anwar El Ghazi was sacked by Mainz 05 for a similar post, sued, and won — German courts ordered Mainz to pay him over €1.5 million. Most English clubs have gone the other way, removing banners or staying silent under scrutiny over sponsors’ ties to Israel. A National League side speaking this unequivocally, while bigger clubs choose censorship, says a lot about English football’s leadership. Forest Green Rovers, already the country’s most progressive club, have gone further than almost anyone. Whether others follow remains to be seen. #palestine #forestgreenrovers #football #futebol #Soccer
