Monique Ngock’s story has only just begun, but the 21-year-old is already leaving behind a major legacy. Ngock played a crucial role in leading the Indomitable Lionesses to their first-ever WAFCON title and was awarded Player of the Tournament in recognition of her impressive debut campaign. Speaking about the significance of the win to Instant Foot, she said: “[Football] is a taboo subject for girls in Cameroon. I made a simple promise to myself in 2017: bring the CAN back to the country and make my people proud.” Ngock last saw her nation compete in the final back in 2016, when she was just 12 years old. Coming at a difficult period in her life, with her family not supportive of her passion for football, the final represented an opportunity for the nation to finally recognise the importance of women’s football. Unfortunately, Cameroon were not able to get over the line, but Monique used that heartbreak to spur her on and ultimately bring the trophy back home – 10 years later. While the standard of women’s football in Africa has come on leaps and bounds, there is still more work to be done. One of the most challenging aspects for many aspiring young women is navigating the social stigma attached to a career in football, and Ngock’s experience speaks directly to the importance of familial support. Now playing for Washington Spirit in the NWSL, having made the move in July before the tournament, Ngock heads back to the States as a WAFCON champion and an inspiration for a new generation of Cameroonian ballers. #wafcon #caf
