Every few years the draft reminds you that the best shooter in the building is not always the first name called.

In 2011, that shooter was Klay Thompson, and he sat there until 11. Golden State took him after Kyrie Irving, Derrick Williams, Enes Kanter, Tristan Thompson, Jonas Valanciunas, Jan Vesely, Bismack Biyombo, Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker and Jimmer Fredette. A lottery pick, sure. A steal, looking back, absolutely.

The case was hiding in plain sight at Washington State. Three seasons, 98 games, 96 starts. He went from 12.5 points as a freshman to 19.6 as a sophomore to a conference-leading 21.6 as a junior. Career averages of 17.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists, with a 39% three-point stroke and an 82.7% free-throw line. All-Freshman. First-team All-Pac-10 twice. The Cougars’ single-season scoring record. Nobody in Pullman was confused about who he was. The rest of the sport just hadn’t caught up.

The rest of the sport caught up. Four rings. Five All-Star games. The record for threes in a game. A 37-point quarter that still doesn’t feel real. Sixty points in under three quarters of basketball. And the counting stats that separate a hot hand from a career: nearly 2,900 threes, fourth all-time, within reach of Ray Allen, made at 40.9% over more than a decade. He is still adding to it.

People forget what a draft steal Klay Thompson was. The shot never let them forget for long.
