I’ve been shooting film since May 2020. I put a roll of UltraMax through my uncle’s old Canon TL from 1968 that I found when I was little. At the time, I wanted to find anything that would push me to think creatively to distract from where I was mentally then. I found so much joy in thinking more intently about composition and waiting to discover how film stocks rendered colors in a way that was entirely different from the digital-look. It was the imperfections that made images pleasing and it was a step away from the clinical and technical way of thought I initially took when it came to shooting.

I’ve come to find as I navigate attempting to be creative how self-critical I am—and unfortunately to my own sort of detriment. It’s a short stones-throw for me to go from being inspired by others’ work to tearing myself down on why I’m not creating perfection with constant output. A barrage of photos, videos, reels, content, content, and more content. It’s difficult for me to post ‘work’ and play ‘the game’ as if somehow what I create isn’t good enough or worthy of adding to the high-saturation of content. That’s sort of where shooting film and leaning into imperfections has helped me.

Here’s an imperfect collection of how I feel I’ve been thinking lately with the shift into summer. Thinking a lot about people and their individual experiences. About their desires and relationships around them. Our connection to nature and spending time outdoors. Healing through moving. How happy I feel when I’m in nature or a new place seeing it all for the first time or coming back to discover more about it.

If you read this, thanks. I hope this is maybe a more realistic and vulnerable look into me and how I view this sort of thing instead of the usual facade I feel like is the ‘norm’ to present here.
