It's been 120 years since fingerprints were first accepted in Victoria as a legal form of identification.

A fingerprint can have as many as 100 identification features, which is why - even after 120 years - it's still considered an extremely accurate way of identifying both criminals and those innocent of a crime.

In 2022, examiners from the Fingerprints Sciences Group processed 274 scenes and examined 3,271 objects including weapons, paper and vehicles – helping identify almost 9000 people.

The department is home to some of the most advanced technology in its field, which is deployed with old-school techniques to help catch crooks and exonerate those who aren't guilty.

And in case anyone is wondering… fingerprints really are unique to each person - not even identical twins have matching prints.

The likelihood of someone else having the same prints as you? Lower than 1 in a quadrillion (that's a 1 followed by 15 zeros).

Bonus trivia fact: the only other species to have fingerprints like humans are koalas and some primates such as chimpanzees, orangutangs and gorillas.
