Today, Victoria Police walked in solidarity with community members at the Walk Against Family Violence.

The Walk marks the beginning of the #16daysofactivism campaign against gender-based violence – an international initiative that calls for awareness and action.

Assistant Commissioner of the Family Violence Command, Lauren Callaway, attended the walk, speaking of the event’s significance and how Victoria Police are working with our partners to help victims and families.

Today’s Walk and the 16 Days of Activism campaign provides an opportunity to come together and acknowledge victim-survivors, our partners and of our own members working the frontline.

As a society, we are making inroads in addressing this issue, but we can’t be lulled into thinking that the hard work is done, after all Victoria Police are still attending a family violence incident every 6 minutes.

Victoria Police are often at the sharp end, responding when people are in crisis and in urgent need of our help.

“If something doesn’t feel right - don’t look the other way, don’t make excuses for the perpetrator. We know that in some cases, this intervention may be the difference between a terrible situation and a tragedy,” says Assistant Commissioner, Callaway.

 Intervening doesn’t mean rescuing. Instead:
🔸 Listen to and believe what your loved one has to say
🔸 Don’t judge
🔸 Maintain regular contact
🔸 Offer practical assistance like creating opportunities when they can speak freely or seek professional support
🔸 Respect their right to make their own decisions when they are ready.
