Six Water Police members have been recognised for their quick action and tireless work during a 2021 incident that sparked a multi-agency effort to rescue a group of stranded beachgoers.

Sergeants Patrick Yeung and Matthew Roberts, and Leading Senior Constables John Hogan and Stephen Carter, were working at the Victoria Police Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) on Wednesday 13 January 2021 when they were notified that a group of people had been swept off the rocks into the water at Bushrangers Bay on the Mornington Peninsula.

Two Life Saving Victoria aircraft provided winching and surveillance capabilities, with live vision of the rescue efforts from the helicopters being fed back to police at the RCC. Ambulance Victoria staff deployed another aircraft and road ambulances, while Leading Senior Constable Jeremy Winfield and Sergeant David McHenry responded in a Water Police vessel to assist with the rescue from the water.

The officers, along with first responders from LifeSavingVic and AmbulanceVictoria were today presented with certificates from Life Saving Victoria to acknowledge their involvement in the complex rescue.
