## Caption

Hurricane Melissa — which earlier blasted Jamaica as a Category 5 storm with historic 185 mph winds — has now weakened to a Category 2 hurricane (winds ~105 mph) and is racing northeast at more than 20 mph toward Bermuda. 
While the immediate threat to the U.S. mainland is reduced, the East Coast from Virginia to New Jersey is under alert for coastal flooding, strong surf, rip currents and heavy rain bands, fed by Melissa’s moisture plume.
