Cherelle Parker is calling for "one Philly — a united city." That was the message she delivered Tuesday as she was sworn in as the city's 100th mayor and the first woman to hold the office. “There will no longer be a tale of two cities in Philadelphia,” Parker said during her inaugural address. “We are going to close the gap between the haves and the have-nots. We are going to put people on a path to self-sufficiency.” Parker takes over a city in a precarious position. Emerging from the turmoil of the global pandemic and the worst gun violence crisis in city history, Philadelphia remains the poorest big city in America, and a majority of residents are most concerned about crime and believe the city is on the wrong track. Crime was a major theme of Parker's first day in office as she signed an executive order declaring a public safety emergency, a move Mayor Jim Kenney resisted.
