In Yucatán, the Day of the Dead is called "Hanal Pixan" from the Maya language, meaning "Food for the Souls"

It is believed that from October 31st to November 2nd, the souls from the deceased come back to the world of the living to visit their loved ones. To honor them, the families create an altar in their homes with favorite objects and food of the deceased, hoping they can "taste them" again through its essences.
