Happy Pride month 🏳️‍🌈 Today, we want to share some information about LGBTQ activism in cieeamsterdam!

The Netherlands prides itself on being one of the most progressive countries in the world. They have gained this distinction by becoming the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001.

Amsterdam had long been known as the “gay capital of Europe,” however, the LGBTQ community has faced issues of marginalization and discrimination due to race and centering the “gay scene” around predominantly white, cis-gender individuals.

Recently, a new generation of LGBTQ activists of color have taken the lead in reanimating LGBTQ politics – and re-making Amsterdam’s “gay scene” into an intersectionally inclusive LGBTQ community.

No matter where you choose to study abroad with CIEE, our staff—all of whom receive regular and comprehensive training in diversity, equity, and inclusion—will be on hand throughout your program to provide advice, resources, and support regarding these issues.
