At 18, Peire Wilson @champ_man_p, born and raised in #NorfolkVA, dropped out of school after the murder of a friend. He returned to school to study at @LaGuardiaCC and became the first student from a community college in the @CIEEStudyAbroad @CenterForMSIs #FrederickDouglassGlobalFellowship. Peire found friends and healing with the other Fellows. "I told them, ‘Honestly, the biggest privilege I have is just being alive. My friend died when he was 18.’ I broke down in tears. That was one of the first moments that my friend’s murder hit me. I told them, ‘You all just need to appreciate just being here. Just having breath in your lungs.’ We were all crying. That’s when we all put our guards down. When the guards were down, there was so much #magic.” #Gratitude to you, Peire, for sharing your story. Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship Application deadline is Feb. 14, 2019. http://ciee.org/fdgf
