We’ve been making an annual road trip to Iowa since 2014, when we had 2 two year olds and an infant.

So here are some great tips and tricks we’ve learned along the way to make the trips more fun, create awesome memories and have the kids looking forward to the next road trip!

We put each child’s clothes in a grocery bag, to keep all of their items together. With 6 of us and all the clothes mixed together, it can be a nightmare to sort through.

I tied the bags I could and used a piece of twine to tie the others. We only bring about 5 outfits and do laundry while gone to limit what we have to pack.

I have to go to California for a diving camp for part of our trip, so I found some sweet Snoopy notes and addressed them to the kids- one for each kid, for each day I’m gone.

Every 3-4 hours we hit a big city or milestone of some sort and I give the kids a surprise if they been behaving. I go to the Dollar Store or 5 and Below to get cheap but fun items that only need to last the drive. I wrap them in tissue paper, so it’s exciting to open!

The kids pack a backpack full of books, toys, lovies- whatever they want to bring, but they have to be able to carry it.

We make a string with those landmark/milestones so the kids can visually see where we’re going. And I made a car with our faces that we move along the string as we hit the milestones. They can really start to understand how far we’ve gone and how far we have to go. And they don’t ask “how much longer?!” nearly as much 😂🤩.

We also pack a cooler with sandwiches, fresh fruit and healthy snacks to cut stopping time, save money and eat healthier with less sugar spikes.

We also stop every 3-4 hours to top off the tank and everyone tries to go to the bathroom EVERY stop.

Hope some of these tips help for your next road trip!
