## Caption

Getting to dive in the same practice as my daughter has been so special! But as fun as today was in the pool together, I’m hoping our talk on the ride home was more impactful.
.
Today Arella found out that all of her diving buddies are moving up  to the next level at a different training time, but she’s not ready yet.
.
When we got to the car, she opened right up about it. She was very proud of and happy for her friends, but she was understandably discouraged.
.
This has been a theme lately. Her younger brother and sister both learned how to ride their bikes before her and have now mastered the monkey bars while she still struggles. Seeing this pattern reminded me of someone… myself.
.
I told Arella about how I was always the last one to learn skills in gymnastics. I was the last to learn my kip, my cast handstand, my giant, my series on beam… I was the last to move up to team. When I started diving, I was older and the last of a group of ex-gymnasts to start. I always felt behind and like I needed to catch up.
.
But I loved each of my sports, and I was determined to catch up with my friends. So I figured out what I needed to improve on, and I got to work. Since this was a common theme for me, it taught me several valuable lessons:
.
1- Setting goals gives you a target to aim for to move forward in the right direction.
2- Hard work is crucial to change a situation.
3- When you work hard and achieve your goals, it motivates you to repeat the process.
4- When you repeat this process consistently over a long period of time, you can go as far as you can dream.
.
It’s hard to watch your child be hit with disappointment, but I’m excited to see where this takes her. And I’m honored to walk by her side through it. These hard moments are often the ones that move us forward in life. #tothepowerofmom
