I am one #proudmom .
You may see a little girl jumping off the diving board for the first time... but I see a girl who faced fear head on.
.
For the first half of practice, she held tightly to the edge of the pool, paralyzed. When I took her aside to see what exactly was going on, she said she was scared of how deep the pool is. Then the tears came because she so badly wanted to dive but the pool terrified her.
.
I reminded her of how good of a swimmer she is, got in the water with her and told her I wouldn't let go until she said she was ready. She hesitated and I felt like my coach's words were coming out of my mouth:
.
"I can be here with you and hold your hand for a while, but if you want to dive, at some point you have to choose to let go and do it on your own."
.
And she chose. And little by little she swam out farther and farther until she was confident she could swim to the side from where she would jump in off the diving board.
.
Then without hesitation, she walked right up for her first jump and took the leap... and then another.
.
And through her beautiful, beaming smile after practice, I was reminded just how important it is to step outside our comfort zone and face our fears in order to grow.
