In this review we break down the Altra Vanish Tempo 2 — the training partner to the Vanish Carbon 3, and the shoe that confirms Altra’s new direction is deliberate. When the Carbon 3 arrived with a 4mm drop, it looked like a one-time concession. The Tempo 2 settles it: Altra has moved every plated shoe in the Vanish line to 4mm while keeping zero drop on unplated models like the Pulse. And this isn’t a refresh. The original Vanish Tempo had no plate and zero drop on a 33mm stack. Version two adds a split PEBAX plate — more flexible than carbon, so you get propulsion and feedback without the rigidity, and the split lets your big toe push off independently just like the Carbon 3. That plate sits inside FAST TRN, Altra’s all-new dual supercritical foam built specifically to hold its bounce deep into long training miles rather than peaking for one race. Stack goes to 34mm heel and 30mm forefoot at 8.5 oz for men’s and 7.3 oz for women’s, with a breathable engineered mesh upper and an independent bottom eyelet that locks your midfoot down without squeezing your toes.
