In this review, we break down the Ridge Merino Windshifter — an ultralight wind shell that exists because a small crew in Mammoth Lakes asked a question nobody else bothered to. Every featherweight windbreaker on the market is fully synthetic, which is why they all feel stiff and crinkly and clammy against bare skin. Ridge built theirs from a 59gsm woven blend of 55% merino wool and 45% nylon, and the result blocks wind just as well while feeling soft enough to throw on over a T-shirt with nothing underneath. At 5 oz it stuffs into its own pocket with a webbing loop to clip onto a pack or belt, so it costs you almost nothing to carry and earns its place the moment a ridgeline turns hostile. Merino's natural odor resistance means days of wear without a wash, a PFAS-free DWR handles drizzle and light precipitation, and the hood stays put when zipped. Ridge was founded in 2014 by a team including a designer who'd led development at a major ski brand and noticed the pros kept reaching for merino over synthetics — that observation became the whole company. Tested across the Eastern Sierra and on a GR20 thru-hike in Corsica from near-freezing to 85°F.
