In this review, we break down the Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody — the warmest, burliest member of the Gamma family, where "MX" stands for mixed conditions. Originally engineered for the rigors of ice climbing, it's since become a go-to for cold-weather alpine missions of all kinds. The fabric is Fortius™ 2.0: a hardwearing 60D stretch softshell at 233gsm (84% nylon, 16% elastane) with a brushed poly fleece backer that adds real warmth and next-to-skin comfort. It blocks wind exceptionally well, sheds snow and light precipitation via a PFAS-free FC0 DWR, and the elastane content means it moves with you instead of fighting you. The helmet-compatible StormHood™ seals around your face without killing peripheral vision, taped seams add weather resistance and strength, and the recently updated regular fit leaves genuine room for layering underneath. At 585g it's not light — but it's not trying to be. This is cold-weather armor.
