In March 2020, Mikie Guerrero’s life changed forever. A devastating car accident left him in a coma for nearly a month. He broke all of his ribs, lost his right kidney, and fractured his pelvis and T3 and T4 vertebrae in his spine. He was just 17 years old.

In the first 24 hours alone, he received 32 units of blood. By the end of his three-month hospital stay, that number had climbed to 64.

“I definitely don't believe Mikie would have survived if he didn't receive blood transfusions,” his mother, Geneva, said.

Grateful for the donors who saved his life, Mikie is using his second chance to give back. Since 2023, he and his family have organized multiple Red Cross blood drives, welcoming 52 first-time donors and collecting 117 units of blood — contributions that have helped strengthen the blood supply and potentially saved countless lives.

“It feels great knowing that I get to help somebody recover from something they went through,” Mikie said. “And also knowing that I might have been the reason why somebody is still alive today.”

57% of Latinos have type O blood, critical for ensuring hospitals can respond immediately to trauma situations like Mikie's. By donating blood, you can make a big difference in the lives of people in your community. Make an appointment to give through the link in our bio.
