The next generation of humanitarian leaders is learning what it takes to apply law, ethics and humanity in times of conflict.

Congratulations to the students from STCL_Houston, who earned first place in the Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Competition at our Washington, D.C. headquarters.

Now in its 13th year, the competition brings aspiring legal professionals together to deepen their understanding of international humanitarian law. Students have the opportunity to connect with peers and experts while tackling complex legal challenges through a simulated armed conflict.

Among the winning students is Sergio Gallardo Felipe‑Ortega from Houston, a first‑generation law student whose experience reflects the real‑world learning and professional growth this competition makes possible.

“It places teams into international humanitarian law roles where the conflict keeps evolving and presents new legal and security challenges each round,” Sergio said. “This experience was meaningful to me because of how much I learned from being part of a team so committed to doing their best.”

We are incredibly proud of every student who took part in this competition and of their dedication to upholding humanity — even in the most challenging circumstances.
