Adriana Higuera treats every student in her lifesaving classes like someone she knows and cares about.

“Whenever I’m in a classroom teaching in Spanish, I see my family,” Adriana said. “I see my aunts and uncles who speak only Spanish. It’s pretty cool to be able to cater to them and say, 'Hey, you can be comfortable.'”

Adriana has been a Red Crosser for 13 years in Los Angeles, where she’s taught lifesaving skills in both English and Spanish. Now, as a program manager for Mission CPR, she’s focused on meeting communities where the need is greatest.

Her work and commitment to accessible lifesaving information are deeply rooted in her heritage as a first-generation Mexican American. She values providing training in a person's native language, knowing it allows for a more engaging and impactful learning experience.

She recently led a Hands-Only CPR presenter training course in Spanish with the support of ARCGoldCountry. Coffee and sweets helped welcome participants, but it was the sense of community connection that stuck with her most.

“Hearing people’s stories has been impactful and why teaching in Spanish has always been my favorite,” Adriana said.

Adriana's outreach expands to water safety, too. She helped grow our free WHALE Tales Water Safety Program for Children in Spanish, which teaches safe behavior in and around the water. Adriana brought WHALE Tales resources to the Honduras Red Cross, which began incorporating the program into their own mission.

Whether she’s teaching CPR, building community trust, or helping others pass on what they’ve learned, Adriana’s goal is simple: to make sure people feel ready.

“The hope is that they never have to use it,” she said, “but if they did, they’d know what to do and feel confident.” ❤️
