Lifeguard Thomas Mann didn’t expect to save a life on his lunch break, but that's exactly what happened.

While pulling into a gas station, Thomas saw a crowd gathered around a man who had collapsed in the parking lot. Without hesitation, he rushed over to help. The man’s heart had stopped.

Thomas sprinted to his car for his first aid kit while someone called 911. He performed CPR until first responders arrived. Thanks to his training, the man survived.

"I knew my place, knew what to do, who to talk to, and what to look for," Thomas said. "It kind of became a natural instinct."

The SoCalRedCross honored Thomas with the Good Samaritan Hero award for his quick thinking and courage. We're grateful for trained lifeguards who are always watching out for our communities, even off duty. ❤️
