When a tornado hit Ravin Roper’s apartment complex in St. Louis, she had one thing on her mind: getting herself and her two dogs to safety.

“I was terrified that I wouldn’t make it down the stairs, but I managed to do it,” she said. “I’m so thankful my dogs were able to get out with me. They mean everything to me.”

Now, Ravin and her pups — Choco Chip and Cookie Cake — are staying at a Red Cross shelter, receiving around-the-clock care and recovery support from RedCrossMO volunteers.

During disasters, we know pets are an essential part of a family’s evacuation plan. That’s why we do everything we can to accommodate them, and we're grateful to PetSmartCharities whose support helped us formally welcome pets at our shelters in 2022.

Our volunteers work closely with families to ensure everyone, including four-legged companions, remains safe and feels supported. We also partner with local animal welfare groups to provide kennels, supplies, or nearby pet-friendly accommodations, if needed.

“It really helps to have them here with me,” Ravin said. “Without them, I don’t think I could get through this.”

If you or someone you know needs a safe place to stay during a disaster, our shelters are here — for you and your pets. ❤️
