8-year-old Lucy, fondly known as “Lucy Goose” in her neighborhood, was always on the run and full of energy — until she began developing intermittent fevers that wouldn’t go away.

“She was very pale and really, really tired,” said Chrissy, Lucy’s mother.

Lucy was diagnosed with leukemia and immediately began chemotherapy. She’s still being treated, and blood transfusions have helped her continue this fight against cancer.

“While Lucy’s cancer was gone after the first month of treatment, she has chemo constantly,” Chrissy said. “The medicine goes for years, and it’s all the medicine that really makes kids need blood transfusions.

“She’s been at it for over a year now and she still has two more years to go. I don’t know what it would be like if the nurses said Lucy needed a transfusion, but we didn’t know how to get it. That would be really scary. Luckily, whenever Lucy’s needed blood, it was there.”

Lucy’s father, Ivan, works for RedCrossNNE and has spent the last six years of his career setting up blood drives to ensure local hospitals have the blood they need to help save lives. He and Chrissy have started an annual drive in Lucy’s honor.

“There are a lot of people who really want to help, but they don’t know how,” Chrissy said. “People ask if they can give us gas cards or bring us meals, and we’re like, ‘You can donate blood.’ Unfortunately, Lucy is not the only kid right now who needs transfusions all the time.”

“When you give blood, you are helping someone who didn’t have the opportunity to say no to a needle,” Ivan added. That’s really what it comes down to.”
